Our Top 7 Picks for a Beautiful, Soothing Master Suite

The average person spends 33 years in bed. Yes, that’s right! And 26 of those years is sleeping. We all know how important that is, so let’s not skimp on the bedroom design! I always follow the Feng Shui principles when it comes to my clients’ Master Bedrooms. After all, 33 years is a long time! Aim for a serene, balanced environment. Don't position your bed in line with the door, use a solid headboard, choose your plants and objects wisely, invest in your bedding….and please…do you need the TV?

1. Quality Bedding

Never sacrifice good quality bedding because you want to save money. It is so important to have that crisp thread count of energy interwoven into your cocoon. As for colors, I always prefer white— it’s a blank canvas that allows you to bring in different accents like pillows, which can be changed according to the seasons and your mood. Find yours here.

2. Solid Headboard

In the Feng Shui world, the headboard should be solid. It is said that the headboard connects you to your partner or future partner. It can also provide stability between your masculine and feminine sides. The headboard can be a very cost effective way to create that designer look—you don’t actually need to buy the whole bed (save that money for your bedding). Grab yours here.

3. Calming Plants

Being surrounded by nature is always relaxing, so consider bringing the outdoors in by making plants a part of your bedroom decor. Now, if you’re like me and don’t have a green thumb, or if you travel a lot, consider investing in some well-made silk plants. I find that the orchids and all white flowers seem to be the least "fake" looking. Make it yours here.

4. Soothing Candles

The smell of a home is the first thing we notice when we step across the threshold. Everyone is particular about smell, and scent has become an indispensable part of design. Candles decorate your personal space with their scent, appearance and also arrangement. Experiment and find your personal secret ingredients that align with your mood. Create that warm, idyllic atmosphere with the flicker of light! Acquire yours here.

5. Personal Framed Photos

Ok, this is the one thing that is "not Feng Shui," but I suggest anyway. I like photos of my loved ones in my bedroom, whether it’s an old toddler picture of my now 18 year old, or an image of my pups on the beach. Seeing these photos at my bedside makes me smile and feel grateful. Those are the images I want to see before I drift off into a deep slumber. Purchase yours here.

6. Serene Accents

I love soothing crystal objects, like a pearlized box to hold trinkets or a dish to put my jewelry in before I get ready for sleep. Keep your decorative objects to a collection of 3 to 5. You don’t want to over clutter. Make it meaningful. Serenity stones and crystals have been used for many moons as an aid to meditation and prayer. Use them as a calming force in your bedtime routine. Buy yours here.

7. Inspirational Travel Books

Anyone who knows me knows that I can’t pass up a good coffee table book. A few travel books that help you drift off into another world is the perfect accent to your nightstand. I like to put them in stacks of three— they can be as visually beautiful on the outside as the pages are on the inside. Just seeing the words "Paris" or "Italy" can send my imagination on a dream journey. Get yours here.
