3 Ways Your Garage Can Make Back-to-School Routines Easier

Are you starting to see all those Back-to-School ads? Yikes, already???? Yep, it’s August and it’s time to start thinking about clearing all out those summer floats and beach balls to make room for the daily hub-bub of school.

Identify those items that your family won’t need once the school year begins, such as tents, sleeping bags, and pool stuff, and store them somewhere safe until you need them again next summer. This will free up more space for items you may need to access throughout the rest of summer and into fall.

Think of your garage as the assembly line into your car-- you want to make it as fluid as possible for your kiddos to pile in while rubbing their blurry eyes at the crack of dawn.

Tip #1: Utilize Wall Space for Storage

Go vertical! Peg boards or Slatwall Panels bought from Home Depot or Lowes are great solutions for flexible storage. Install hooks that keep all the heavy winter coats in one place, and wire shelves and baskets that easily hold sports equipment, hats and gloves.

Give each family member his or her own space so everyone’s belongings aren’t jumbled together. Consider installing a locker or something resembling lockers. They are just as effective at home as they are at school.

Tip #2: Get Organized with Bins and Boxes

Go label crazy! I personally am obsessed with my Brother P-Touch label maker.  You can buy hanging tags for your wire baskets and label the clear bins and boxes. Color Code! Leave no room for doubt or future treasure hunts.

Tip #3: Designate a Drop Zone for Specific Items

Let’s face it: even the most organized people need room for error. I like to have two large plastic bins at the entry designated as "Drop Zones". The first bin is for donations— my kids grew like weeds, so it seemed like a monthly occurrence that items like shoes became too small. The second bin is for clutter left in the car or clothes accidentally left by friends.

A Smooth Routine

The goal of using garage storage for Back-to-School is to make your life easier and less confusing. The mass exodus in the morning will go smoothly, and you won’t find yourself rushing back to get something.  Same goes for the return of the troops in the afternoon. Above all...don’t forget your coffee! You got this!
