3 Questions to Ask to Discover if You Need an Interior Designer

Hiring an interior designer isn't for everyone, and it is important to consider whether it is right for you, personally, before hiring one. Designers are a dime a dozen, we all have different approaches. I have prided myself over the years in really listening to my clients.  After all, you are inviting someone into all aspects of your personal life. There has to be a connection, and please, your opinion counts— it’s your dollar. You must be heard. Don’t hire someone just because of their celebrity clients or  swaggy portfolio. Ask yourself: Will I be heard, and will my needs be met? At the end of the day, it’s your home not theirs.

1. Do You Have Big Picture Goals for Your Home?

This is a tricky one. They don’t have to be specific, but big picture goals for your home and how you live are essential. It is our job as the Interior Designer to decipher your style and taste, taking into consideration the way you live your day to day life.  I don’t want you to live in a glass box where you feel you can’t relax!

A pre-requisite for project success is a deep dive into your inner self and what makes you feel at home. I always invite my clients to make a folder or Pinterest board of images they hate and images they love. Together, we then sit down and discuss what their thoughts are. This is a great strategy for establishing vision.

2. Are You Ready to Invest in Your Home?

Interior Design is an investment, financially and time -wise. Are you willing to be patient and trust the process? A good designer will present you with a budget and be completely transparent about fees. A designer legally does not have to show you their trade pricing, that is just something unique to how I work. Everyone works differently. Over the years I have found that explaining my business financial platform helps with a smooth design process. Be smart. This is your home!

3. Do You Enjoy Delegating Tasks?

Those of you who want a hands-on-role in creating your home may not need a full-service designer.  For this very reason, I created FDS Design Source. It is a result of having so many people tell me that they want to decorate their own home but just don’t know where to go for those unique pieces. I can create a portal for you, just as a personal shopper at Bergdorf’s would pull a bunch of clothes for you, and then you choose which items to purchase.  It’s a no harm no foul process. Check it out for yourself!

Interior Designers are for those who want to hand over the reins. If you are still unsure, set up a consultation, we are always happy to hash out the pros and cons with you. Let us help you navigate the process.

If you would love some support creating your happiest home, we would love to help. Reach out and let's get to know each other.
