3 Effortless Ways to Prepare Your Home for Easter or Passover

The origins of Easter are as far removed from bunny rabbits as the origins of Passover are from coconut macaroons.  Although certainly two different celebrations in many ways (I celebrate both), Easter and Passover share the same purpose of personal redemption. The holiday weekend arrives just in time for spring cleaning, so it's no coincidence that we feel the urge to reboot and refresh. The weather is getting warmer, and we want to celebrate!

1. Design a Creative & Curated Tablescape

The Passover holiday is deeply rooted in gathering around the table for evening Sadar, while Easter usually is celebrated as a Sunday Brunch. Undoubtedly, both holidays carry great traditions of symbolic food such as eggs, carrots, and lamb.

Setting the table for both is fun and easy. A few of my favorite design tips are to take large carrots and line a clear glass vase before putting in a bunch of white tulips or lilies. Make edible Matzah place cards with a cake decorating pen for names. Another showstopper is to make your hardboiled egg a part of your napkin ring for each setting, which you can interpret as the Easter bunny or Moses in his basket!

2. Keep it Simple by Fusing Fresh Decor & Family Heirlooms

Don't overdo it when using seasonal decor and old family heirlooms to decorate your table. Keep it simple! Stick to a color story and groups of three to avoid looking like a mishmash of stuff splayed across your tablecloth. There are so many symbolic traditions shared between these two holidays. Pick a few to keep sophisticated!

3. Plan & Purchase Festive Essentials Early

I love this time of year as much as I love Christmas and Hannukah. Take the time to prepare and enjoy the process leading up to the festivities. Make your lists and get your items early! I remember one year, at the last minute, I couldn't find white eggs for the life of me! And yes, those are the only ones that dye well! By them early, they won't go bad! The same goes for those beautiful carrots with green tops that make great table decor! Order your lamb and buy your Passover Matzah weeks before!

I am excited about the holidays this year. Before moving to Puerto Rico and pre-covid, we always had an open house on Easter Sunday with an Egg Hunt and Afikoman Search. My kids, who are practically adults, have asked to do it again. I'm looking forward to watching the generations of families and friends gather on my lawn on a beautiful Spring Day! We have a lot to celebrate!
