3 Ways to Update Your Cherished Furniture Without Buying New

So you want an update but have no patience for long lead times and delays in the supply chain, nor do you want to spend a fortune on new furniture. Plus, you genuinely love Grandma's old dresser. It brings back beloved memories. There are many ways to create a fresh look without breaking the bank! Here are 3 options…

1. Refresh Treasured Pieces with Reupholstery

Connect with your local upholsterer and ask how much fabric you need to bring back your beloved piece to the current century. For fabric, scour your local fabric shops or the internet for remnants. I also love the trend of re-using material such as an old Gucci scarf or fabulous lambswool shawl and making them into a one-of-a-kind throw pillow.

Also, ask if it needs to be re-stuffed. Sometimes a new foam-wrapped down cushion can make a world of difference.

2. Easily Stretch the Life of Furniture with Slipcovers

If you ever want to change the color of your sofa, it's easy to buy a new slipcover in an updated hue or pattern. Slipcovers come in many different looks, from flowing and loose to precisely tailored ones.

The internet has a vast amount of resources. You will be sure to find what you are looking for. For example, I love the parson chairs and slipcovers from Ballard Designs. They also have a fantastic "essential side table," which, when covered with one of their tablecloths, adds a fresh bit of pizzazz to any room without the high price tag!

3. Upcycle or Repurpose The Best Elements

Is Grandma's dresser falling apart but has ultra-posh hardware you can’t find anywhere else? Well, take it off and use it on something else! And vice versa! Switching out drawer pulls of a piece can be a game changer, and it is so easy!

Another quick way to update is to use peel-and-stick textured wallpaper or fabric paper.  By pasting it on the drawer inset, or perhaps just the top of a table, peel & stick paper can give plain furniture new life. Lastly, another favorite trick is swapping out the piece's legs. You can find these on the great wide web too!

There are so many creative ideas for upcycling old pieces into something entirely new. Redesigning your look and style doesn't have to be a costly venture. Use what you have; besides, you will be right on trend with sustainability and preserving our environment! DIY isn't dead! Have fun!
